The Farm of Henry Kaiser

Set in the 1890’s, The Farm of Henry Kaiser, concerns a man, Henry Kaiser, and a figurative prison made by Henry’s commitment to his dead wife, Grace, and her dying wish. Her wish was for her daughter, Gladys, to receive the farm upon marriage. Eve, Henry’s niece, who was taken in by Henry when she was eight, is blamed by Henry for Grace’s death. Thus, Henry demands that Eve serve the memory of his dead wife. Because he cannot keep workers, Eve works the farm -out of guilt. Henry knows that if Eve leaves the farm before Gladys marries, the dying wish of his dead wife will not be fulfilled. But, Eve falls in love with Jake, a stranger with a dire circumstance he cannot escape. The romantic feelings are mutual. They are happy -until Henry finds out. Then, we find out just what lengths Henry will go to in his perverted quest to keep his dead wife’s dream alive.

James Clevenger resides in St. Joseph Missouri, where he received his B.A. in Theater from Missouri Western State College. Before embarking on a playwriting career, he acted in around 20 different productions at the College and Community Theater level, including lead roles in Little Foxes, Equus, Much Ado About Nothing, Curse of the Starving Class, and others.

His writing has gained attention on the national level in prestigious story contests. In Theater, he has designed sets, directed, and designed lights as well. Those experiences gave him a grasp of what technical aspects of a production (costume change time, sight lines, etc..) need to be considered, even at the writing stage of a play. He has multiple published works available at Black Box Theater Publishing Company including Pursued by a Runaway Train, The Farm of Henry Kaiser and The Mice Plays as well as a collection of short stories.
